Review: Sofie Finds A Best Friend | Buttercup Books

 

I would like to say a huge thank you to the authors, Carrie and Corey Webber for helping me get my hands on the digital copy of this book. Thank you so much. You guys are amazing! It was so delightful reading this as my first transition from summer to autumn book. I hope it turns into a series in the future. 

 

I love the autumnal woodland atmosphere. All the soft illustrations are expressive and adorable and  just makes it such a cozy, autumn read. Kid the Goat was my favorite character. His scene was memorable and cute. His gentle rejection shows that a "no," or communicating a boundary was a healthy interaction between him and the main character, Sofie, and I loved it so much. 

 

And I love how Sofie stays kind and warm even when she faces repeated rejection. It's because rejection is reframed as a mismatch, not cruelty. Just because someone says no to you, doesn't automatically mean something is wrong with you. 

 

Not to spoil anything, but Sofie does eventually find someone who is a better fit. Someone who can play with her and be a better match. And she ranks him higher than everyone else and crowns him the "Best Friend" title because out of all the doors she has opened in the story, he was the one that is the most compatible with her. I love that the ending is not only happy, but a reassuring one.

This felt like the perfect autumnal picture book to me: woodland animals, acorns, a cozy treehouse, tea parties, and a gentle lesson about friendship, rejection, and finding the person who is just right for you.
