I just want to preface this by saying that I love the heck out of Vivian Leigh. I am aware of my own bias and now that has been disclosed, I would like to continue with my review of this film.

Main Character: ✮✮✮✮✮

Characters: ✮✮✮✮

Story: ✮✮✮

Pace: ✮✮✮

When I first watched this film, the first ten seconds, I was ready to close it out because it was somewhat grainy and it was restored with a brown color instead of the usual silver screen. I'm so glad that I didn't drop this film because I thoroughly enjoyed watching it from the beginning to the end.

Vivien Leigh shines in this movie and I really liked Laurence Olivier's performance as well. He can emote like no other. And Leigh steals the show every time she's on-screen. My favorite parts of the film were the sets. I wish sets were still used today. They look so quaint and magical and offer less distraction.

Plot summary: Larry Durant (Laurence Olivier), the family's black sheep, has accidentally killed the husband of his lover Wanda (Vivien Leigh). With the help of his brother, Keith (Leslie Banks) an attorney on his way to becoming a judge, they try to delay judgment for as long as possible.

And so the couple Larry and Wanda try to squeeze in three decades within twenty-one days before the jury decides that the case has become a cold case (if they are lucky), or if they aren't so lucky, Larry turns himself in.

Once the idyll bliss starts to run out and we're near the end of the reel, the film becomes suspense and a thriller. I was at the edge of my seat the whole time.

/// Spoiler alert /// Leigh is the one to rescue Olivier when she holds up a newspaper for him to read, while he is on the steps of the police station. I was so moved when we see Olivier's tall and bigger frame crumples to cry on Leigh's smaller frame. I would say Leigh chasing him in the street markets was where the film was at it's height. I just realized that I've been enjoying a lot of black and white films where the female lead rescues the damsel in distress which is the male lead. You can read my review of a similar film titled "Safe in Hell" (1931)
